Gene Louw Primary has a large number of music learners who participate in piano, recorder, flute, guitar and vocal training.
In October each year, the music learners and teachers of Gene Louw and Durbanville Primary celebrate their talents and love for music in style at the La Musica Prestige Music Concert. Wonderful music is made!
The MUSIC NOTE/MUSIEKNOOT is a music newspaper that is handed out to music learners and choir members once a term. It has articles about music, interviews with music learners, pictures of choir camps and information on individual achievements.
Piano: 34 learners entered the different examinations and fared exceptionally well.
Classic Guitar: 16 learners entered the Trinity Classical Guitar examinations and fare extremely well.
Tygerberg International Eisteddfod – Music: Our learners perform exceptionally well. There are 35 entries for Piano, 50 entries for Solo Singing and 71 entries for Classical Guitar.
Tygerberg International Eisteddfod – General: There are 248 entries in the difference categories of which 48 are awarded Highest Honours, 148 Honours, 48 Honourable Mention and four Merit. Gene Louw Primary also has 14 category winners.
Choir achievements for 2016 and 2017
In 2016, the Senior Choir was the winner of the Best Primary School Choir (Religious) and also received a Gold Plus and a Cum Laude Award at the Stellenbosch Eisteddfod. At the Tygerberg Eisteddfod they achieved an exceptional average of 93,33%. At the ATKV Final in Stellenbosch, the Senior Choir was the runner-up and also won the prize for Beste Uitvoering van die Voorgeskrewe Werk.
The Junior Choir had an exceptional year. The choir received a Cum Laude Award at the Stellenbosch Eisteddfod and was announced as the Best Junior Choir overall. At the Tygerberg Eisteddfod they achieved an excellent average of 90,33%. At the ATKV Applous Choir Competition they received a Gold Award and were crowned as the Best Junior Choir in their section.
In 2017, both choirs continue with their excellent work and make us proud! Both the Junior Choir and the Senior Choir perform exceptionally well by winning their respective categories at the Stellenbosch Eisteddfod. Both choirs also perform brilliantly at the Tygerberg Eisteddfod Gala Choir Festival where the Junior Choir achieve a second place and the Senior Choir are crowned the winners with 92,3%.
The Senior Choir also participated in the ATKV Applous Choir Competition. At the countrywide ATKV Final, the Senior Choir wins the category for Meer Ervare Laerskoolkore with a final score of 90,05%. The choir also wins the prize for Beste Uitvoering van die Voorgeskrewe Werk.
World Choir Games 2018
The Senior Choir participated in the World Choir Games in Pretoria from 10 to 15 July 2018. The choir participated in the Championship Division and received a gold and a silver medal.
The Senior Choir has participated in the National ATKV Applous Choir Competition for the past 20 years and has the following impressive record:
